Greetings to everyone out there. 2016 has already started with a bit of aviation action, when I visited 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, the Snowbirds, back in January. The new show is progressing well, as the team prepares for the new season. I am hoping to make another visit to the team before they depart for their annual spring training deployment to 19 Wing Comox, BC.
Speaking of Comox, I will be travelling there for the first time, to not only cover the Snowbirds, but to also get a sneak peak at the 2016 CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Team. The demo pilot for this year is Captain Ryan "Roid" Kean, from London, Ontario. Captain Kean is currently an instructor pilot with 410 "Cougar" Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron, located at 4 Wing Cold Lake. As usual, the CF-18 will sport a commemorative paint scheme and this years theme is the 75th Anniversary of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP).
Other events I plan to cover are the Snowbirds Home Opener, at the end of April, as well as air shows in Cold Lake and Edmonton. Also, Exercise Maple Flag will once again be held at 4 Wing Cold Lake this year. Maple Flag is a multi-national training exercise aimed at training junior pilots in a unit, with regards to operating as part of a coalition package. Maple Flag also offers some great photography opportunities, when it comes to military aircraft from countries, outside of Canada. Along with the exercise, an Open House is hosted by 4 Wing, giving the public, an opportunity to see the aircraft up close and talk to the aircrews. It's also a great time to load up on patches and other squadron swag! In August, I will be travelling to Edmonton, Alberta, for the Edmonton Airshow. This show offers a good mix of civilian and military acts, along with a few warbirds. It will be my first time there, so it should be interesting! Final aviation event I plan to cover is the Snowbirds Year End show, in October.
I will also be returning to the race track in 2016 as racing action comes back to Wyant Group Raceway (formerly Auto Clearing Motor Speedway). The racing season is shaping up to be a good one as a number of drivers switched classes, during the off season. From the Bandoleros to the Pro Trucks, I hope to bring you closer to the action, this season.
Overall, I am excited about this year, and the photographic opportunities that I have.
